ඔය කියන තිලින අලහකෝන් මගේ එක්ක කාලයක් “මව්බිම” කියන මාද්ය ආයතනයක වැඩ කෙරුව. ඔය කඩවත පල්ලියේ තිබුන ඔහුගේ විවාහ උත්සවයට මටත් ආරදනාවක් ලැබිල මමත් ගියා. නමුත් ඔබ ඔය කියල තියෙන විදිහේ කිසිම දෙයක් නම් එතන උනේ නැහැ. මගේ මිතුර කතෝලික ආගමේ නිසා පල්ලියේ චාරිත්ර කෙරුව. ඔහු විවාහ උන තරුණිය බෞද්ධ ආගමේ තරුණියක් නිසා බෞද්ධ විදිහට චාරිත්ර කරලා පෝරුවේ විවාහ උනා. වෙනසකට තිබුනේ වෙනද හොටෙල් එකක හදන පෝරුව පල්ලියෙන් විශේෂ අවසරයක් අරගෙන පල්ලිය ඇතුලේ හදල තිබුණා. ඒ කරපු වැඩේ කාටත් ආදර්ශයක් කියල තමයි එකට ගියා බෞද්ද අපි හැම දෙනෙකුම කතා කෙරුවේ. ඔය තියෙන පත්රිකා නම් එහෙ තිබුනේ නැහැ. මම හිතන්නේ ඕක කලින් හැදුවට කව්රු හරි ඔය වැඩේ කරන්න එපා කියන්ඩ ඇති. කොහොම උනත් ඔය විවාහයට ගොඩක් බෞද්ධ අය ඇවිත් හිටියා මනමාලිගේ පැත්තෙන්. එතන ඔය කියන විදිහේ ලොකු බෞද්ධ අපහාසයක් උනා නම් ඒ අය නිකන් ඉන්නේ නැහැ. අනික මාද්ය ආයතනවල ගොඩක් බෞද්ද අය ඇවිත් හිටියා. ඔය කියන විදිහේ වරදක් තිබුනානම් ඒ අය නිකන් ඉන්නවද? අනික මමත් හොඳ බෞද්දයෙක්. මමත් ඔය වගේ වරදක් එතන සිද්ද උනා නම් ඒ ගැන නිකන් ඉන්නවද.? ඕක මම දකින්නේ කව්රු හරි විවාහයට නොගිය කෙනෙකුගේ වැරදි වැටහීමක්. අපි දන්නා විදිහටනම් ඔහු අපේ බුදුදහමට ගොඩක් ගරු කරන කෙනෙක්.

First of all I need to tell this is just a friendly knowledge sharing and friendly discussion.no intension of insulting any person, any religion, etc.
I know about this situation long time back. We Catholic just wanted to add local cultural things to make the religion very close to the people who follow it. We were not trying to dis-respect other religions or harm their cultural and other values. But as I can see we have done somewhat a mistake by doing so. Early stages of our Catholic history all rituals were done in Latin where only priests and alter servants and who ever understand Latin can pariticipate on Mass properly. so they changed it to Sinhala so every one can participate.Like wise we’re doing small changes to our rituals to bring it close to all its followers.
If we have done a mistake please be kindly advice on us without making unnecessary problems. After all, we all are humans, humans learn by mistake all the time. So Please don’t call us as Extremists or Fundementalists.
This is to all our Catholic and non Catholic priests,monks,people. Please do not make it a big problem by putting the blame on others just kindly have a friendly conversation and solve the propblems.
And regarding this article we Catholics also have something called “Holy Trinity” as in Bhudism ( no offense or dis-respect) thats why the people who ever changed original Mangala Gaatha” changed “Holy Triple Gem”( I guess that how you called in English-sorry if I used wrong terminology). Hence please be more knowledgable before writing any critics on other religions matters. As a Catholic I respect all religions in the world no matter what religion you follow you must give respect to other religions as well thats how I use to learn my students in Sunday school and that how our elders, teachers taught us.
And please told called the our holy terms,words,phrase as sinful, Its hurting us alot. Another reason to say it is that there are idiotic people who will read this articles and make it as a point to start riots. I don’t think any religion, philophy is advicing people to fight or hate each other. All they say is stay in peace and love one another. I hope that I have not hurt or insult any person or any religion and their feelings in this. If I have done anything like that please accept my kind applogy as I was not intended to do anything like that. And Hope this will be a start for a good friendly conversation.

It is the local Catholics who embraced an alien religion and a pseudo culture to go with it in the first place. In the event they want to integrate themselves back into the local culture, that’s perfectly alright. However, that reintegration does not provide anyone with an open license to distort or inappropriately use long respected Buddhist scriptures. The sheer frequency of repetition of so called “mistakes” occurring makes one wonder whether these “mistakes” are rather intentional.

Once again, it is an accepted norm to engage in religious rituals in one’s mother tongue. Even Pali scriptures have been translated into Sinhalese for the layman to practice his Buddhist way of life in a meaningful manner. However, unlike in the case of the Catholics mentioned above, translation into Sinhalese has not resulted in any tinkering of the mush respected rituals.
Correct me is I am wrong but this lackadaisical attempt at translating Catholic hymns from “Latin” to “Pali” is ludicrous at best. On the hindsight this is not even “Pali” but a crude attempt at tinkering Pali stanzas with a select few Sinhalese words at their convenience. This is simply not done, and very fortuitous to have been tolerated for this long.

Yadi, yadi yah. Haven’t we heard this 1001 times before? Those who practice this sort of fundamentalism/extremism make these so called mistakes not by “mistake” but on purpose. Every time the friendly conversation is initiated with a view to solve a problem once another such “mistake” occurs, a familiar cry of “Sinhala Buddhist Extremism” is chanted over and over.

A shame indeed.

The critic who wrote the article has demonstrated enough knowledge and understanding about Buddhism and Sinhala Buddhist cultural practices IMHO. However whether the writer of the comment demonstrates such competence regarding the Catholicism and related practices is questionable. Sinhalese Buddhist are one of the most tolerant people on the face of the earth and respect must be earned not demanded.

කඩුවේ බලයෙන් හා යම් වරප්රසාදයන් දී ලංකාවට හඳුන්වාදුන් ආගමික පවුලකින් පැවත ඒම නිසා මොහු තුල විශාල හීනමානයක් ඇත. එමනිසා මොහුට අවශ්ය ක්රිස්තියානිය දේශීයකරණය කිරීමටය. ලංකාවේ සංස්කෘතිය, සිරිත්-විරිත් බුද්ධාගම හා බද්ධවී එකිනෙකින් වෙන්කළ නොහැකි ආකාරයෙන් තිබෙන බව මොහුගේ දේවවාදී මොළයට නොවැටහේ. මොහු “තුණුරුවන්” කියන්නේ, මොහුගේම වචනවලින් සර්වබල දෙවියන්, සර්වබල පුත්රයන් හා සර්වබල සුදතුන් යන තුනටය.
පරංගින් ලංකාවට හඳුන්වාදුන් ක්රිස්තියානිය ආතක්-පාතක් නොමැතිව ඉබාගාතේ ගියේය, දැනටත් යයි. එය හඳුන්වාදුන් ආකාරයද ඒහා සම්බන්ධ සම්ප්රධායන්ද සිංහලයන් වන අපට තවමත් මුළුමනින්ම ආගන්තුකය. එමෙන්ම ඒවා හඳුනාගෙන ආගන්තුක භාවය නැතිකිරීමටද සිංහල බෞද්ධයන් වන අපට අවශ්ය නොවේ. මක්නිසාද යත් ඒවා අප පිළිකුලෙන් යුතුව හෙලාදකින කිසිසේත්ම පෙරදිග රටවලට නොහොඹින සම්ප්රදායන් හා සිරිත්-විරිත්ය.
මොහු උත්සාහ කරන්නේ ලංකාවේ ආතක්-පාතක් නැති, පිළිකුල් සහගත ආගමකට , බුද්ධ ධර්මයෙන් හොඳින් පෝෂණය ලැබූ සංස්කෘතිකාංග සොරකම් කර එබ්බවීමටය.
නමුත් මේ මෝඩයාට නොතේරෙන්නේ රෝමන් සංස්කෘතියෙන් ආභාශය ලැබූ පරංගින් විසින් හඳුන්වාදුන් ආගමකට සිංහල බෞද්ධ සංකල්ප කිසිසේත්ම නොගැලපෙන බවයි. මෙයින් මොහු බෞද්ධ සංස්කෘතියට විශාල අපහාසයක් කොට ඇත. මෙවන් පුද්ගලයන්ට අනුශාසනා කරන, මොවුන්ගේ ක්රියා අනුමත කරන “අර්නස්ට් පෝරුතොට” වැනි පාදිලියන් සිතාමතාම බෞද්ධ සංස්කෘතියට අපහාසකිරීම අනුමත කරන පරංගින්ගේ පුත්රයන්ය. මොවුන් එක්වී මෙම ක්රියා දිගින් දිගටම කිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තු වන බවක් ඉහත ඇති පත්රිකාවලින් කියැවේ.
මේවා නැවැත්වීමට සිංහල බෞද්ධ සංවිධාන ක්රියා නොකරන්නේ මක් නිසාද?
බුදු දහම ප්රමුඛත්වයෙහිලා ආරක්ෂාකිරීමට ව්යවස්ථාවෙන් බැඳී ඇති නීති පද්ධතියක් ඇති මේ රටේ ඉහත කරනු ලැබ ඇති අපහාසයන්ට නීතිමය වශයෙන් දඬුවම් කල නොහැකිද?
