September 17 is the Birthday of the Hon Anagarika Dharmapala, one of the National Hero of Sinhalese, who fight for the rights of the Sinhala Buddhists. He strongly protested against the killing of cattle and eating of beef. If you are Sinhala Buddhist, now is the time to again pay our attention about his great scarification and we must try to follow his path.

PS: When I mean BULL in above I mean the BUFFALO which is illegle to kill.
One more thing: Cows DON’T help us in our CULTIVATION. Have you every seen COWS in paddy fields helping out farmers??? It’s is the BULL that is used. COWS and BULLS are different, don’t you know that??? Are you living in Sri Lanka???
Also, bulls are NOT USED by farmers anymore in helping out in the paddy field. That was done 50 years ago. NOW, farmers use Mr. Ray Wijewardene’s hand-held tractor, better known as the Landmaster and other machinary.
Where exactly are you living??? Havent’ you gone to a paddy field and checked how things are dont there???

Well, sure there maybe a few who use cow dung and use buffalos(but remember it is illegal to kill buffalos) but you have to look at the big picture. That may constitute at most about 20-25% of the total. The rest uses machines and pesticides. Cow dung and organic manure is used only by a handful of farmers in SL.
Why, havent’ you heard of the infamous “pohora sahanadara” or “fertilizer sussidy” given by the government to local farmers. These are non-natural fertilizers (not cow-dung).
I would also like to pose you a question: Assume they ban slaughter of cows and we agree. Then after some time would you start this same charate against pigs and goats?? Will you be completely satisfied that since no cow is killed here everything will be oK? I don’t have to to remind you that when you ban slaughter of cows, some other animal will take it’s place and here it is going to be the goat.
Now, about a 1000 cows are killed every day in SL. That amounts to about a staggering 350,000 year. Now, to replace a cow at least 10-15 goats will have to killed. This means when you ban slaughter of cows, in place of that an additional absolutely whopping 4 MILLION goats will be killed here in Sri Lanka.
Think about this: You stop the killing of 350,000 cows a year. Great. But now you end up killing 4 million goats per year.
So now what???
I am just trying to point to you the futility of asking peoply ONLY to refraing from eating one particular animal. It’s makes no sense. If you make a case saying all Buddhists should be vegetarians, then that makes some sense, although the Buddha himself solved this issue by given the answer in the Negative.
Yes, Cows give milk. But what u don’t know is, in SL animals that can be killed for meat is strictly controlled by the Animals Act. According to the Animals Act you cannot slaughter pregnant cows, buffoloes and yes MILK COWS. In every slaughterhouse the Gov. Vet. Surgeon inspects all the animals before slaughter and it is not possible to kill milk cows (i.e. female cows). Like I said you are just completely emotional. You cannto think rationally. You are also not telling the truth. All supermarkets purchase beef from registered slaughter houses which strictly adhere to the Animals Act since the Gov. Vet. Officer is there (i.e. this is mandatory). Of course there could be illegal slaughrehouses which slaughter milk cows and buffoloes. These meat is if available could be found in individual meat stalls run by Muslims. But then again, you can’t expect the general public to be concered about these things. There is a law in this country and you expect the gov. to implement and maintain the laws. So when you go to the supermarket and buy meat do you expect the consumer to check whether the cattle killed adheres to the Animals Act?? Don’t be ridiculous. When you buy vegetables from the market do you check whether they were stolen or make using slave labour or whether they used pesticides??? So don’t talk nonsense about cows giving milk so we have to save the cow. Chickens give eggs, which are pound-for-pound better than milk. We can get only the eggs from the Chicken and spare the chicken. But we don’t do that, DO WE???
You are ranting about cows simply becuase of it’s size and LOOK. The cow is an innocent LOOKING anima and hense all this attention to one animal.
Like I explained, you people who rant about cows and beef are making a completly joke out of Buddhism. And YES I AM A BUDDHIST and YES I eat beef.

My answer is I'm not eating chicken or egg. So no need to save chicken or gratitude to chickens as they are giving eggs.
Your arguments are so important as I'm expecting to write a book regarding "why we should be vegetarians" in Sinhala Language. Therefore thanks for your ideas.

Ridiculous. How can Buddhist show special affection to only cows. You are making a mockery out of Buddhism. Either ask people to be vegetarians or just keep you illogical emotional arguments to yourselvs.
Lord Buddha honored to the Esathu Bo Tree, because that tree helped to stay when he was getting the enlightenment. In the same way we must give a special concern to cows as they are giving milk and helping to our cultivation. But as you said we are against the killing of all beings.
